The SIE file format

The SIE format is an open standard for transferring accounting data between different software applications from different software vendors. SIE can be used to transfer data between local programmes as well as via APIs. Due to the widespread use of the SIE standard in the software industry in Sweden, it has become a de facto standard for transferring accounting data. The format is open to everyone, but only SIE members can get their software approved.

Different types of SIE formats

Type 1: Year-end balance sheet
Contains opening and closing balances for all accounts in the chart of accounts.

Type 2: Interim financial statements
Same content as type 1, plus balance changes per month for each account.

Type 3: Profit centres
Same content as type 2, plus balances for different profit centres.

Type 4: Transactions
Same content as type 3 and additionally all receipts in the financial year.

Type 4i: Transactions (vouchers only)
Only supporting documents. The purpose of this format is to enable the generation of vouchers in various supporting systems and then import them into the accounting system, such as payroll systems or invoicing software.

SIE Group

The SIE Group is an organisation that develops and maintains the SIE format. The members of the organisation are primarily Swedish software vendors and accounting associations. SIE-gruppen is a non-profit organisation and the current operations are managed by the Board of Directors.

SIE-gruppen is one of the standardisation organisations for accounting systems in Sweden, together with BAS(www.bas.se) for the Swedish Standard Chart of Accounts and XBRL Sweden for financial reporting(www.xbrl.se). These three organisations cover the basic standards for accounting, financial reporting and regulatory reporting. SIE and BAS have almost 100% implementation coverage in the Swedish market for accounting, financial and tax management software.
