FIBO Trade Fair
FIBO is a curious abbreviation for Fitness Boom, and takes place in the enormous trade fair centre in Cologne, Germany. It is the world's largest fitness exhibition, and exhibitors and visitors travel there from all over the world to spot new trends, meet suppliers and customers, or to take a closer look at competing products.
After a couple of quiet years due to the pandemic, the fair is finally back in full swing and all serious players in the international market were present with clothing, supplements, gadgets, wellness products, and of course training equipment.
A system like ours, or similar, is not represented there, but who knows what the future may bring! In the aftermath of the pandemic, most training centres have focused on floor space and space optimisation – they had done so before as well, but with distancing restrictions, hand sanitising, and so on, serious consideration has been given to fitting as much equipment as possible for individual use into as little space as possible.
It was easy to see how the biggest fitness trend at FIBO in 2023 was cable attachments built into squat racks. No fewer than 15 different brands from near and far had lined up with this as something new at FIBO. Some had plate-loaded versions and others had weight stacks – our personal favourite is perhaps a little influenced by the high-end market: the Eleiko Prestera rack with cable attachment had both better and broader rotation and versatility, smooth travel, and Eleiko's own handles gave a superior feel.
Among the most innovative products must be the ANTAGONIST® by Haeyven, which we had never heard of before. The machine consists of 4 turbines, similar to those found on a Concept2, and these can be angled 180 degrees and deliver a truly wild workout in a very short space of time. All in all, the experience is rather difficult to describe, but you can watch more on YouTube here, or read more on their own website. The machine is rather large, but it really cannot be compared to anything else!
